伊恩·霍姆是英国最受称颂的舞台和电影演员。尽管演艺事业一直以舞台为基础，但在晚年的时候却在银幕上大放异彩，广受欢迎。在阿托姆·伊戈扬（Atom Egoyan）1997年影片《甜蜜来生》（The Sweet Hereafter）中，伊恩扮演感情受创的律师赢得了特别的赞誉。1931年9月，伊恩·霍姆出生在依尔福的一家精神病院，他的父亲是这里的医生。1950年他进入伦敦皇家戏剧艺术学院学习，后来进入莎士比亚皇家公司，在《奥赛罗》中初次登台。1956年他第一次登上伦敦西区的舞台，参演了《Love Affair》，随后跟着劳伦斯·奥立弗（Laurence Olivier）制作的莎士比亚剧《泰特斯·安德洛尼克斯》（Titus Andronicus）赴欧洲巡演。此后10年间，他经常回皇家公司参加演出，多次获奖，其中有两项晚间标准演员奖，1967年他在百老汇剧目《还乡》（The Homecoming）中的表演获得托尼奖。
1968年影片《仲夏夜之梦》（A Midsummer Night's Dream）是伊恩在大银幕的首次亮相，他对自己的表现很不满意，同年的《The Bofors Gun》为他赢得BAFTA最佳男配角奖。此后的30年间他继续活跃在英国的电影和电视界和戏剧舞台上，主要电影作品有《英宫恨》（Mary, Queen of Scots）、《异形》（Alien）、赢得奥斯卡提名和戛纳电影节最佳男配角奖的《烈火战车》（Chariots of Fire）、《时光大盗》（Time Bandits）、《哈姆雷特》（Hamlet）等。1998年他凭借《李尔王》（King Lear）一剧获得奥立弗最佳男演员奖。
